Driveways on Mount Eden's Flat Ground

Asphalt paving in Mount Eden means building on some of the flattest, lowest ground in Hayward. Mount Eden was founded in 1850 by farmers from Mount Eden, Kentucky, who were heading for the Gold Rush; a few settled at a road crossing and nailed up an "Mt. Eden" sign. The district stretched from the bay shore east to Telegraph Road, now Hesperian Boulevard, with farms, trans-bay shipping and salt harvesting. Most of it was annexed by Hayward in the late 1950s, and the remaining unincorporated islands were annexed between 2003 and 2009.

Low, slow-draining ground

At about 43 feet, Mount Eden's lots are flat and drain slowly. Old farm and marsh soils near the bay can stay damp. Driveways here sink, crack and hold puddles when the base is thin or the subgrade soft. A new driveway needs soft soil removed, a compacted aggregate base, and a surface set with instruments to drain to the street.

Postwar homes

Much of the housing was built after annexation, so many driveways date from the late 1950s and 1960s and are well past their service life. We replace them with a proper base and, where lots allow, add width.

Salt history

Salt companies along this shore consolidated over the decades; after the Oliver Salt Company closed in 1931, only Leslie Salt remained. Much of the former salt-pond land is now being restored to wetland.

City permits

As part of Hayward, Mount Eden falls under the City's encroachment permit for any work in the street or sidewalk.

Typical work

  • Driveway replacement with subgrade repair
  • Regrading to stop ponding
  • Widening for extra cars
  • Sealcoat and crack sealing on newer driveways

Neighborhood landmarks

The name lives on in Mt. Eden High School, Mt. Eden Cemetery, Mt. Eden Park and the Mt. Eden Mansion. The post office opened in 1860.
