Paving in Cherryland

Asphalt paving in Cherryland happens on lots carved from old orchards. Cherryland largely occupies about 2,200 acres of orchards that belonged to William Meek, called the first farmer of Alameda County, and Cherryland was the name of one subdivision started by his heirs in 1911. Today it is an unincorporated community of 15,808 people on about 1.19 square miles, one of the densest areas in the county. Of its 5,125 homes, 69.7 percent are rented.

Dense lots

Many Cherryland properties have long, narrow lots with several units and a shared drive down one side. These drives carry more cars than they were built for. We rebuild the base, set the slope to drain to the street, and pave.

County rules

Cherryland is overseen by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. Work in County roads and rights-of-way needs a County encroachment permit.

Older driveways

Many driveways are old and thin, laid directly on soil. Overlays rarely hold on these; replacement with a proper base is the lasting fix.

Meek Mansion

The Meek Mansion on Hampton Road, in northern Cherryland, is a reminder of the area's orchard history.

Typical work

Shared drive rebuilds, small lot paving, repairs and sealcoat.

Typical Cherryland projects

The most common job is rebuilding a long shared drive that serves several units on a narrow lot. These drives often have thin asphalt laid directly on soil, low spots where water stands and edges broken by cars cutting the corner. We remove the old surface, compact a proper base, slope the drive to the street and finish the edges. Small parking areas behind multi-unit buildings get the same treatment. For owner-occupied homes, we replace or resurface single driveways and seal them. With very high density, deliveries and parking during work need planning; we coordinate with owners and neighbors.

Maintenance

After a rebuild, sealcoat in a few months and crack sealing before winter keep the drive in shape.
